Premiered in 2010 by the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra led by Marin Alsop, this single-movement work is intended as a mostly-extrovert concert opener.
Program Notes
Dalliance, for large orchestra, is intended to be a short and spirited concert opener. It opens with a full orchestral tutti that abruptly stops and establishes the chamber-like nature of the piece, first highlighting solo woodwinds and pairs. They introduce the melodic germ of the piece, a short, Stravinskyian eighth-note motive which will recur in various guises throughout the work. The middle section is a broader, more meditative portion which emphasizes the expressive characteristics of the strings. A short brass fanfare heralds the re-arrival of some of the initial material. This takes the work to a brisk and thunderous close.
Dalliance was composed in the spring of 2003 and was not yet been performed publicly until 2010 at the Cabrillo Festival, alongside premieres of Kevin Puts, Michael Shapiro and John Adams. It was one of the top three finalists in the 2003 Brooklyn Symphony New Orchestral Works Competition.
